Up to episode 18 of The Irregular at Magic High School (spoiler warning)

I kept watching out of sheer inertia, ‘cos I was too lazy to start anything else. That doesn’t mean The Irregular at Magic High School has improved much over the first 6 episodes. The second arc was a slight improvement over the first, but not enough to move the series into “good territory.”

Last time I mentioned that the large number of characters hurts the series, and all the second arc did was add even more inconsequential characters who get a little attention for a few minutes and then vanish into the ether again. Honoka, for example. We get that she has a crush on Tatsuya, but… so? Erika’s brother appears, then disappears. And apparently his name is “Kentsugu” and he’s dating Mari, but didn’t Mari refer to her boyfriend as “Shu” in an early episode? Well, whatever.

In any case, a series about an overpowered hero is only good if he has someone to really show that power against. The more competent the bad guys, the better the main character looks when he overcomes them. When they’re Saturday morning cartoon villains like in this show, then it’s just like shooting fish in a barrel. I even start feeling sorry for the poor suckers.

mahouka miyuki tatsuyaThe first arc was a laughable affair, with some of  the stupidest terrorists I’ve ever seen in my life. So you want to break into the school and steal their secrets? Why do it in broad daylight when nearly all the students are present? Why not go in at night when there’s only security and maybe a few stragglers to dispose of? And once their attack on the school failed, why would they all stay huddled together in one building waiting to be taken out by anyone who cared to do it? Why not disperse and regroup later? Since they were so dumb, Tatsuya gets no points for taking them out.

But that was just the introduction, right? The subs even call it the “Orientation” arc. Then the Nine School Competition begins, which is pretty much the Olympics for magicians. And there’s a shadowy group of triad members plotting to take down our hero’s school, will they succeed? And what is Tatsuya going to do about Suzaku a super-powerful rival by name of Ichijou Masaki?

Yeah, well, he basically kicks everybody’s asses like he always does. That Ichijou guy was an overrated one-trick pony anyway. The only reason we know he’s supposed to be good is because the story says so. All he does is put some magic circles in the air, then Tatsuya jumps around all kung-fu like and stuff and then eventually beats Ichijou by snapping his fingers. …This post contains spoilers, btw.

The “fight” with the triad guys is even more pathetic, so much so it doesn’t deserve a description. He basically shoots them all from 1000 meters away after toying with them for a bit. “Nobody threatens my little sister and lives!” Good for you, Tatsuya, good for you.

tatsuya-shiba-anime-mahouka-koukou-no-rettouseiSo… not much has happened since the series started except the whole world is being forced to recognize just how strong and manly and intelligent and unbeatable and wonderful and [insert 200 other superlative adjectives here] Tatsuya is. Whether you like The Irregular at Magic High School or not will depend largely on how much you like Tatsuya and enjoy watching his bored-looking efforts.

Personally I’m on the fence. I can’t say I like him, but I don’t hate him either. His characterization is a bit inconsistent though. Sometimes he says “I have no emotions except siscon love” but then he goes ahead and shows all kinds of emotions anyway, from amusement to annoyance to embarrassment to shock and surprise, so what exactly does he mean by he has no emotions? Luckily the writers aren’t skilled enough to make me care about getting to the bottom of his personality. I just wish someone strong enough to push him to the limit would show up before the series ended.

I’m going to place my final hopes on the third and last arc. Another 8 episodes and we’ll talk again.

Thoughts on The Irregular at Magic High School after episodes 1-6

I’m more into manga and books than anime these days, but since I did name this site Animefangirl.com, I suppose I should watch some anime once in a while. Come to think of it, I should have picked a more manga-like name, but it’s too late now. Anyway I don’t have anything against anime. They just don’t fit my busy lifestyle so it takes me quite a while to get through even a short one these days.

I picked The Irregular at Magic High School because I usually enjoy high-school based series. I was also promised an overpowered main character who has all the side characters standing around going “Wow, he’s so powerful!” in every episode. That kind of premise sounds boring to many people, but I thoroughly enjoyed series like Akagi and One Outs, so I know this could be awesome if the writers tried hard enough.

Summary: In 2095, Tatsuya Shiba and his sister Miyuki Shiba are new students enrolling at the Private Magic University Affiliated High School (First High School). Miyuki topped the entrance exams and is selected to be the first years’ representative, while Tatsuya is placed in Course 2 due to his low practical test scores, despite scoring highest in the written/theoretical portion of the exams.

I hate the pseudo-incest vibes, btw.
I hate the pseudo-incest vibes, btw.

So I started watching Irregular about two weeks ago, but I only got up to episode 6 because of aforesaid busyness. That, and the show is pretty boring. The opening animation and the first episode fooled me into thinking this would be an action-y kind of show with Tatsuya kicking all kinds of butt with his awesome analytical and ninja-fu skills. Uhh… no. Maybe that part comes later. Like, way later.

All his fights have lasted about 5 seconds so far and then the next 15 minutes of the show is devoted to breaking down the fight like we care. If you like technobabble and world-building and that kind of thing then I suppose you won’t be too bored by all the talking that goes on instead of action, otherwise The Irregular is just a massive snoozefest.

Still there’s more to anime than just action and talking. What about the characters? Uhh… yeah. They exist, vaguely. I think the problem comes from the fact that the show is a light novel adaptation so the director feels compelled to shovel in all the light novel characters even when the show would be better served by taking them out. It’s only episode 6 I know but a lot of characters barely register on the scale. Hattori, for example, pops up again and it’s like “Who?” And I haven’t seen the loli Student Council member in a while so why not just take her out? Erika hadn’t shown up in ages then suddenly she’s the star of  episode 6 and it’s like… whaaa?

Which is not to say the main characters are so interesting that I’d like the show to focus on them, though. Tatsuya has all the charm and personality of a brick wall and his sister Miyuki just exists to bring the show down with her forced yandere reactions. Their ‘loving’ pseudo-incest interactions are not cute, not funny, not original and not anything I care to keep watching.

So having said all that will I continue watching The Irregular at Magic High School? Probably not. I have a pretty severe bandwidth limit so I don’t know if I want to waste it on stuff I’m not really enjoying. I’d like to check some forums and see if the series picks up a little later, but discussions tend to be clogged with light novel spoilers, which I’d really rather avoid. I’m going to put this show on the shelf and try some other stuff for now. Maybe I’ll be back later, maybe I won’t.

My thoughts on: Hajime no Ippo

My favorite sports manga of all time. It’s number 17 on the list of best-selling manga for a reason i.e. it’s good. And it’s really, really long as well. It’s best read in huge chunks at a time, which is why I haven’t followed the weeklies in roughly 5 years, but I still consider it one of my favorites. Whenever someone on a forum or chatroom asks for a sports manga, a shounen manga or a long-runner, my first question is always “Have you read Hajime no Ippo?” Followed by “Go read Hajime no Ippo” if the answer is no.

Like most sports series, Hajime no Ippo also works excellently as an anime, though ideally you want to follow both the manga and anime for the best experience. The anime, especially the first season, is spot on in every way you can imagine. The voices are perfect for the characters, the soundtrack by Tsuneo Imahori is awesome and really gets you fired up and the action is tense, fluid, perfectly drawn, perfectly timed and perfectly animated. Although it’s unfortunate that Ippo didn’t do so well when it came to the west as Fighting Spirit, (and I bought all the DVDs too!) I’m sure anyone who picks it up will never regret it.

My top 5 reasons why Hajime no Ippo is so great

1. The characters are the best ever. The main character isn’t as annoying as other wimpy main characters tend to be and the supporting cast is one of the strongest in manga history. Even the match opponents are nicely fleshed out without going overboard. You’re bound to find someone you can root for, whether you like jokey comic characters, serious dignified ones or legit tough guys.

s-Ippo_012. It is soooo funny! When he’s being funny, I think George Morikawa is probably one of the best comedy mangaka in the business today. Some of his sight gags are just so funny they have me rolling on the floor in stitches no matter how many times I read it. He’s great with silly puns as well and I still find myself saying “This isu naisu!” sometimes.

3. The women don’t take over the show. I’ve read too many series that got derailed by romantic hijinks to get happy when the main character of a shounen series falls in love. Some readers may find it frustrating that Ippo still hasn’t gotten together with Kumi after 1000 chapters, but I prefer that to this becoming some soppy love-soaked romance.

4. The action is great. Especially when you watch the anime, you can really feel the impact of every single punch. The boxers move (reasonably) convincingly like real boxers and adopt many of the same poses and actions. Some things might be a bit annoying for real boxing fans, e.g. Ippo’s terrible guarding skills, but everyone can enjoy the slightly over the top attacks which are crazy but juust subtle enough to be almost believable.

5. It’s a super long-runner. This may be a plus or minus depending on your point of view, but if you’re enjoying a series, the longer it lasts the better, right? The earliest 40 volumes or so are the high points of the series, but even now it’s still an excellent series with plenty of room left for growth for all the main characters. If you haven’t read the series before, now is a good time get in and enjoy a nice, long binge.

I think I’ll take my own advice and catch up on 5 years of missing Ippo action. Archive binge, here I come!

My thoughts on: Bleach

Continuing my series on the 20 best-selling manga of all time (the ones I’ve read anyway), this time we have Bleach by Kubo Tite. It’s been a while since I dropped it, but I remember it’s about a boy named Shirosaki Ichigo who accidentally (and we find out later, not so accidentally) gains the power of a Shinigami (soul reaper) and has to fight enemies named Hollows so he can save dead souls from being eaten by them.

As with most shounen stories, especially recently, Bleach starts out relatively simply with a standard Monster of the Week format and then rapidly spirals out of control. I picked up the Bleach anime very early in its run, then dropped it and switched to the manga when I’d watched all the episodes currently out. For a while it went well. I liked the simple story, the Hollows were suitably threatening without being too scary, I liked the personalities of Rukia, Ichigo and especially Kon. The battles were a little hard to follow but the art style was clean and nothing dragged on too long.

kenpachiThen Soul Society happened. And that was okay, really. But it just went on for so, so long that I was ready to drop the manga by the end of it. I decided in to hang in there a little longer and what did I get for my troubles? Hueco Mundo. My anime-fu powers told me by that point that Ichigo & Co. were going to be in Hueco Mundo for a loooong, long time, so I decided to get out while the going was good. IIRC the last chapter I read featured Kenpachi fighting with one of the Hueco Mundo bad guys and the battle was like “I’m stronger than you!” “No, I’m stronger than you!” “No, I’m stronger than you!” Repeat for 10 chapters. In fact, repeat for 200 chapters and you have every battle in Bleach.

Of the Big Three Shonen Jump manga (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach), Bleach is the one I dropped the fastest. Which is a little sad because I introduced several people to the series and they absolutely loved it. So they’d keep coming up to me week after week with “Did you see X vs Y this week!?” and I’d be like nooo, I dropped Bleach ages ago and they wouldn’t believe me. Unfortunately they’ve all grown tired of Bleach as well now. They stuck it out through Hueco Mundo and through the Karakura Town arcs and then instead of the manga ending Kubo Tite apparently started a new arc. Which I hear isn’t half bad, but series fatigue has just set in for most people I know.

tl;dr Bleach is not a bad series at all for shonen fans, but you do need a lot of patience. If you haven’t started it yet, it might be best to wait for the whole thing to end and then read it all in one go.
